  • ASIC is seeking a full-time Senior Lawyer to join their Registry Law Team
  • Salary starting from $152,704 depending on experience (plus up to 15.4% superannuation)
  • Permanent position to be based in either Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane

The team The Registry Law team sits within ASIC's Legal Services group. Registry Law performs a range of service functions for ASIC's registry operations and projects and plays a key role for the Registry Connect Program to stabilise and uplift the ASIC registry services. The work of the team includes giving legal advice on matters arising under the legislation administered by ASIC and advising on law design and operation for the Registry Connect Program and other initiatives that impact registry services. The team advises on a wide range of matters relating to registry operations including third-party agreements, court matters, administered revenue, delegations, policies, procedures, communications, information and privacy. The role As Senior Lawyer – Registry Law, you will provide expert legal and policy advice supporting ASIC's registry responsibilities and operations. You will work closely with lawyers, program and operational leads to deliver clear guidance, research and analysis, and you will mentor and support team members to ensure high-quality outcomes.

  • Provide and coordinate specialist advice on legislation administered by ASIC as it relates to registry functions, including the design and operation of law for the Registry Connect Program.
  • Conduct and oversee administrative law matters relevant to registry operations, including Freedom of Information applications, privacy obligations, administrative reviews of ASIC decisions and complaint investigations.
  • Draft and review legal instruments, agreements and communications (including third-party agreements and administered revenue matters).
  • Prepare internal briefs and reports; engage with other ASIC teams and external advisers on complex registry law issues.
  • Monitor regulatory reform and legislative changes impacting registry services; provide practical guidance on implementation.
  • Lead, mentor and supervise team members; contribute to planning and delivery of registry legal work.

About You You bring strong technical legal capability, excellent communication skills and sound judgement. You are proactive and collaborative, able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Demonstrated experience as a lawyer within a government department or agency, or in a legal firm that consults to government.
  • Proven experience understanding, interpreting and applying legislation, with insight into how legislation operates in practice.
  • Ability to present complex information clearly to varied audiences and build productive stakeholder relationships.
  • Strong organisation and time management skills; ability to deliver high-quality outcomes to deadlines.

Technical Requirements & Certifications

  • Legal qualifications and eligibility to hold a Legal Practising Certificate in a State or Territory of Australia.
  • Post-admission experience (PAE) in government, in-house or law firm settings with relevant registry, administrative law and public-sector experience.

Additional Desirable Requirements

  • Ability to work independently and take accountability for outcomes.
  • Strong legal writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Client-service focus and effective stakeholder management across diverse teams.
  • Experience preparing internal reports and briefings on key matters and projects.
