Job details

A Commonwealth agency is seeking a highly skilled Senior Azure Cloud Engineer to contribute to a series of transformation and application modernisation projects. The role requires a strong technical grounding in Azure cloud architecture, infrastructure automation, and refactoring legacy applications into secure, cloud-native environments.

The successful candidate will be embedded within an agile delivery team, working closely with developers, architects, and security specialists to deliver scalable and compliant Azure solutions aligned with Whole-of-Government cyber security overlays and the Essential Eight.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, develop and implement Azure cloud capabilities including Azure Policy, App Services, SQL Databases, Key Vault, Front Door, and Enterprise Landing Zones.
  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) artefacts to automate infrastructure provisioning and configuration management (e.g. ARM, Bicep, Terraform).
  • Refactor and modernise legacy applications to leverage cloud-native technologies.
  • Contribute to the creation of high-quality solution and technical designs that align with enterprise standards.
  • Participate in daily scrums and manage assigned tasks via Azure DevOps, following agile delivery principles.
  • Ensure solutions comply with CASA security and governance frameworks, WOG cyber security overlays, and Essential Eight requirements.
  • Provide input to documentation, risk assessments, and operational readiness reviews.

Essential criteria

  1. Capability:
  • Proven ability to deliver scalable, secure and maintainable Azure solutions aligned to business needs.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise landing zones, network security in Azure, and identity management integration.
  • Ability to translate complex technical requirements into practical, compliant implementations.
  1. Experience:
  • 5+ years’ experience in cloud engineering, with at least 3 years focused on Microsoft Azure.
  • Demonstrated success delivering “as-a-service” capabilities, implementing IaC (Terraform, Bicep or ARM), and migrating on-prem workloads to cloud.
  • Proven experience working within Commonwealth or secure government environments, ensuring solutions are built to the Official security classification standard.
  • Familiarity with agile project environments and use of tools such as Azure DevOps for sprint planning and backlog management.
  1. Pricing:
  • A competitive, fully inclusive rate structure that incorporates all fixed costs, superannuation, insurance and taxes.
  • Rates are consistent with EL1-equivalent roles under Commonwealth ICT Labour Hire arrangements and can be negotiated based on experience and clearance status.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience integrating Azure services with hybrid or multi-cloud architectures.
  • Familiarity with PowerShell, Python or Bash for automation scripting.
  • Understanding of WOG Cyber Security Policy, Essential Eight, and IRAP assessment processes.
  • Experience in DevSecOps or Cloud Security posture management frameworks.
  • Current Baseline or higher AGSVA clearance.

Working arrangements

  • Based at CASA’s Canberra office (18 Marcus Clarke Street, Civic).
  • Standard hours: 8:00am–5:00pm, Monday to Friday (40 hours per week).
  • Remote work may be approved where it aligns with operational and security requirements.
