The Team

The Sexual Assault Medical Service is a specialised service of both doctors and nurses within the Department of Health’s Women’s & Children’s Service, supporting adult and paediatric clients affected by sexual assault and family violence.

The team works as part of the broader Tasmanian health system to provide safe, accessible, culturally respectful and evidence-based care to vulnerable people. Through multidisciplinary collaboration, clinical leadership, education, quality improvement and strong links with community and justice services, the team supports the Department’s commitment to safeguarding, improving health outcomes, and ensuring coordinated care for individuals and families across the community.

The Role

Provide expert clinical and forensic care for adults affected by sexual assault and family violence, including forensic examinations, evidence collection, medico-legal reporting, court testimony, and support for paediatric assessments. Lead clinical governance, policy development, statewide reporting, and continuous quality improvement to ensure evidence-based practice.

Build workforce capability through education and stakeholder engagement, strengthen partnerships across health, police, child protection and justice sectors, and support compliance, risk management, safeguarding, and service development to deliver high-quality forensic and support services.

You will need

  • Highly developed clinical management and leadership skills, and demonstrated advanced clinical expertise in the specific area of forensic and clinical examination in accordance with best practice standards, utilising a high degree of independent decision making, with the ability to perform as an expert witness in relation to evidentiary processes within the criminal justice system.
  • Demonstrated highly developed leadership, communication, interpersonal, problem solving and decision making skills with the ability to apply these skills within a sensitive setting and to ensure effective partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Highly developed skills regarding the coordination and integration of contemporary information and research evidence to support decision making, innovative thinking and objective analysis to achieve agreed outcomes within Sexual Assault Support Service setting, including the ability to contribute to the review and development of policies and procedures relevant to the practice setting.

Details of appointment

Permanent part time, day worker position, working 22.8 hours per fortnight, commencing from 19 October 2026.

Salary

$118,297 to $125,543 per annum (Pro rata). Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Nurses and Midwives (Tasmania State Service) Agreement 2023.

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

  • Post Graduate Allowance of up to 10% based on qualification type

You’ll have access to salary package a range of benefits including living expenses up to $9,010 + $2,650 in meal entertainment each FBT year + other benefits if eligible.

Eligibility

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria

  • Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Nurse
  • Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

  • Holds or is working towards a post-graduate qualification in the area of sexual assault forensic and medical examination.
