This position is an appointment to the personal staff of the President, Children’s Court of Western Australia. pursuant to s 27A of the District Court of Western Australia Act 1969. Appointment will be by contract of employment to commence in January 2026 for a period of 12 months, with the possibility of renewal. About The Role This is a rare opportunity to work directly with the President of the Children’s Court of Western Australia. In the context of working within a small team of administrative staff in the Chambers of the President, this position requires the ability to be flexible, work collaboratively with others and perform well under pressure in a sensitive work environment. The key responsibilities of this position are to undertake legal and general research for consideration by the President; assist in the preparation of submissions for legislative reform; prepare practice directions, papers, reports, correspondence, speeches, advice and provide high level secretariat support. About Us The Children’s Court of Western Australia deals with juvenile criminal offences committed between the ages of 10 and 17 years. It also covers adults who were historically charged. The Court also has a civil division which hears cases involving the protection and care of children under the Children and Community Services Act 2004, restraining orders against children and Health Act applications. The Perth Children's Court consists of the President (a District Court judge), a Deputy President (0.5FTE), six full time Magistrates, two Acting Magistrates and a legal Registrar. The Perth Children’s Court also convenes a range of therapeutic courts which cover Children’s Court Drug Court, Dandjoo Bidi-Ak Court (protection and care matters) and In Roads Court (criminal diversion matters). ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY Applicants must hold a tertiary qualification in law or be in their final or penultimate year of their law degree. About You The successful candidate will possess high level legal research, analytical interpersonal and written communication skills. The successful applicant will be required to prepare and provide accurate and well-reasoned research, advice, reports, draft Practice Directions and other correspondence for the President; maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate judgement to ensure the integrity and standards of the Court are upheld. You must be able to work independently, show initiative and be able to problem solve. When considering applying for this role, it is important to consider the jurisdiction of the Children’s Court and the subject matter incumbents will be exposed to. The Children’s Court deals with juvenile criminal offences including, murder, sexual assaults against children, serious assaults, robbery, criminal damage, burglary and juvenile drug offences. In the course of their duties, incumbents will encounter evidence and other materials (including but not limited to photographs, videos, written statements and oral evidence) associated with these charges. This material may be confronting and/or disturbing for some persons. The Department of Justice offers a range of services and resources to support staff.
