Job purpose

As an Application Developer, you’ll build and maintain the features that 45,000+ practitioners rely on every day to run their practices and care for their patients. You’ll work within Halaxy’s established architecture and patterns, writing reliable, secure, high-quality code that makes a real difference to how healthcare is delivered.

You’ll take ownership of well-defined pieces of work and see them through from start to finish, testing your own code thoroughly so it’s ready for the real world. Along the way, you’ll get to know our product and codebase inside out.

You’ll work closely with fellow developers and our Testing and Product teams, contributing to the quality and performance of a platform used in 100+ countries. As your experience and judgement grow, so will the size and complexity of the work you take on.

Responsibilities

Technical design and delivery

• Task Delivery: Complete development tasks within the platform's established patterns and architecture, use AI tools to explore the codebase and using existing functionality to build similar functionality.
• Back-End Development: Write efficient, secure, and maintainable PHP code in line with Halaxy's engineering standards. Utilising AI at each step and owning the final output.
• Front-End Contribution: Contribute to front-end functionality using JavaScript, jQuery, AJAX, Typescript, Angular and HTML/CSS as required to support application features. Using AI to accelerate component builds, debugging and cross-browser checks.

Data

• Working with Data: Write and optimise queries and work within existing database schemas and data models across MySQL, maintaining data integrity and utilising AI where necessary.

Platform health, performance and security

• Issue Investigation: Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve application, code, and performance issues using AI, raise problems early rather than working around them.
• Secure Development: Apply secure coding practice and handle practitioner and patient data in line with Halaxy's privacy and compliance obligations.
• Improvements and Bug Fixes: Deliver enhancements and bug fixes that support product stability, performance, and scalability.

Quality and release

• Testing: Test their own work thoroughly before it moves on and participate in quality assurance and release processes.
• Predictable Delivery: Follow Halaxy's development workflow, including planning, estimation, working to weekly goals, communicating progress, and raising risks early when the plan changes, embedding AI throughout the workflow.
• AI-Assisted Development: Use approved AI tools to work effectively, taking personal responsibility for reviewing and verifying AI-generated code before it enters the codebase.

Capability and knowledge

• Learning and Growth: Build understanding of the product, its users, and the codebase, seeking guidance where needed and applying feedback from code review.
• Knowledge Sharing: Share learnings proactively rather than staying in one area, and guide new starters in areas where they have expertise.
• Documentation: Contribute clear documentation for the work they complete.

Collaboration and ways of working

• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with Product, UI/UX, Testing, DevOps, and Service teams to deliver cohesive solutions.
• Standards: Follow Halaxy's engineering & AI standards consistently.
• Agility and Adaptability: As Halaxy is an agile organisation, responsibilities may evolve over time to meet business needs, and additional duties may be required from time to time.

Skills, knowledge & competencies

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Typically, 3 or more years' experience in application development within a technology or SaaS environment.
• Working experience with PHP and modern PHP frameworks (Symfony / Laravel).
• Hands-on experience using AI coding assistants in day-to-day development, with the judgement to know when to trust, question or rewrite the output.
• Knowledge of front-end technologies, particularly JavaScript, with exposure to HTML/CSS and related frameworks.
• Hands-on experience working with relational databases and SQL-based technologies.
• Demonstrated ability to apply strong logical thinking to solve technical and business process challenges.
• Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities concurrently and deliver them predictably.
• Good problem-solving skills, with a proactive and solution-oriented approach.
• Initiative, accountability, and ownership of their own work, together with the confidence to ask for support early.
• Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams.
• Good verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts clearly.
