Assistant Accountant | Part time (3 days per week) 12-month maternity leave cover | Brisbane A hands-on finance role supporting payroll and core accounting activities. We are looking for a detail oriented and reliable Assistant Accountant with payroll experience to join our small, collaborative Finance team on a part time basis, covering a 12 month maternity leave period. This role is based in Brisbane and plays a key role in payroll processing and broader finance support across the business. About The Role Reporting to the Finance Manager, this is a hands on and delivery focused role responsible for end to end payroll processing and providing financial accounting and general finance support. You will work closely with the Finance Manager, Accountant and Accounts Payable team to ensure payroll, superannuation, PAYG and compliance obligations are delivered accurately and on time. Your part time working week will be busy, structured around regular processing cycles, and will include a mix of payroll, accounting and ad hoc finance support. This role suits someone with strong accounting fundamentals, high attention to detail and the ability to manage competing deadlines while maintaining confidentiality with sensitive information. In this role you will be responsible for:Payroll Processing and Maintenance
- Process fortnightly payroll and superannuation for approximately 30 employees
- Prepare and lodge Single Touch Payroll submissions with the ATO each pay cycle
- Complete month end and year end payroll close off, including accruals and reconciliations
- Prepare and lodge accurate monthly payroll tax returns for QLD and SA, including contractor reconciliations
- Administer the payroll system, support employees with payroll queries and liaise with the payroll provider on system issues
Financial Accounting and Support
- Prepare and lodge monthly BAS returns by required due dates
- Assist with FBT preparation and supporting workpapers
- Prepare accounting journals and support month end processes
- Review vendor set ups, changes and deactivations in line with internal controls
- Prepare weekly cash flow estimates for customers
- Assist with payment run reviews
- Perform corporate credit card reconciliations and follow up variances
- Complete ad hoc reporting and other finance tasks as required
Other Support
- Assist the Accounts Payable team on ad hoc issues when required
- Support the Finance Manager and Accountant with process improvement initiatives
Skills and Experience You will be an organised, detail oriented finance professional who enjoys payroll and working in a cyclical, deadline driven environment. You will have a minimum of three (3) years experience processing payroll within a finance team, with demonstrated experience across month end payroll activities including reconciliations and accruals, supported by solid accounting fundamentals. - Strong payroll knowledge, including superannuation, PAYG and compliance requirements
- Sound accounting skills, including journals, reconciliations and month end processes
- High attention to detail and a strong focus on accuracy
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing deadlines
- Clear communication and effective problem solving skills
- A proactive approach to identifying and resolving discrepancies and improving processes
- The ability to handle confidential information with discretion
- Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills
- Experience using Employment Hero Payroll is advantageous
