We are currently working exclusively with one of Queensland's most active Renewable Energy Developers, Energy retailers and Generators backed by the Queensland Government. in CleanCo.
The Financial Control Manager plays a critical leadership role in managing core finance and accounting operations within a dynamic energy market environment. This includes oversight of financial and management accounting, tax and treasury, settlements, revenue accounting, reconciliations, accounts payable/receivable, procurement, and payroll.
Working within a regulated and rapidly evolving energy sector, the role ensures accurate financial reporting, cash flow management, budget consolidation, and compliance with relevant statutory, accounting, and taxation standards. The Financial Control Manager also contributes significantly to financial systems transformation, including the development and enhancement of the ERP system.
This role partners with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure financial integrity and support the organisation’s commercial and operational objectives in energy trading, generation, and customer delivery.
Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Control Strategy & Governance
- Develop and implement a robust financial control strategy aligned with energy market compliance, risk management, and corporate objectives.
- Establish and enforce financial control frameworks, policies, and processes tailored to energy sector operations.
- Oversee the preparation and audit of financial statements in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards and energy sector regulations.
- Build a culture of continuous learning, capability uplift, and operational excellence within the finance team.
- Foster collaboration across business units, including Energy Markets, Generation, Customer Operations, and Corporate Services.
- Recognise and reinforce contributions across teams to drive engagement and accountability.
Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure compliance with AEMO, AER, and other statutory reporting requirements in addition to core tax and financial obligations.
- Lead the development of financial reporting tools and cycles to meet both corporate and regulatory needs.
- Provide timely and insightful performance reporting for executives and key stakeholders, including gross margin, trading outcomes, and network cost trends.
- Evaluate financial performance against forecasts and budgets, including variance analysis for regulated vs. unregulated operations.
- Lead budget planning and forecasting cycles, supporting energy market strategy, procurement, and capital investment planning.
- Oversee taxation compliance, including energy-specific rebates, levies, and environmental reporting obligations.
Stakeholder Engagement & Leadership
- Work closely with internal stakeholders across Energy Markets, Generation, Risk, Legal, Governance, and Finance.
- Liaise with regulators, auditors, tax advisors, and market operators (e.g. AEMO) to ensure timely reporting and compliance.
- Stay informed of changes in energy market regulation, trading practices, and financial governance standards.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing Financial Control team, fostering a strong sense of purpose, ownership, and capability.
- Support team members in goal-setting, continuous feedback, and professional development within an energy finance context.
Qualifications & ExperienceEducation / Certifications
- Tertiary qualifications in Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline.
- CA or CPA qualification required.
Essential Experience & Skills
- Proven leadership experience within finance or financial control roles in the energy, utilities, or infrastructure sectors.
- Strong understanding of Australian Accounting Standards and financial regulations, with application in energy market operations.
- Expertise in ERP systems and financial systems transformation within complex operational environments.
- Familiarity with energy markets trading, settlements, and the role of Back and Middle Office functions.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interpret and present complex financial data to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to engage and manage stakeholders across regulatory, operational, and commercial domains.
- Industry experience in retail energy, generation, transmission, or market operations highly desirable.
