The Role As the Unit Manager Workplace Relations, you will shape Merri-Bek’s workplace and industrial relations framework and set the standard for best-practice ER/IR. Reporting to the Manager People and Safety, this role blends strategic oversight with hands-on delivery to ensure high-quality IR/ER/HR advice and coaching aligned to organisational priorities. You’ll lead a respected team of HR Business Partners and specialists, driving initiatives that lift engagement, policy maturity, performance and culture, underpinned by trusted relationships with executives, managers, employees and union representatives. Duties And Responsibilities You will champion effective, compliant and people-centred workplace and industrial relations services. Key responsibilities include providing authoritative advice, coaching, and support to leaders and the HR Business Partnering team; managing complex employee relations cases; representing Council in investigations, conciliations, and tribunals; being the key contact for managing union relationships; and fostering strong, constructive partnerships across the organisation. The role oversees change management, workforce planning and HR systems optimisation, delivering clear reporting and insights. You will develop and review policies and procedures, lead HR projects, and drive continuous improvement, while nurturing a positive team culture, building capability and upholding Council’s commitment to good governance and best practice. About You You bring extensive ER/IR experience in unionised environments, proven people leadership and deep knowledge of employment legislation. You’re a credible relationship-builder and influencer who navigates complexity, balances interests and delivers pragmatic, outcomes-focused solutions. Tertiary qualifications in HR, Business, Law or a related field are essential; postgraduate qualifications are highly regarded.
