  • Home Support Program could be replaced by Support at Home starting July 2025.

  • Workers given just eight days for consultation on the changes.

  • Vital in-home support services may be abruptly ceased, impacting community safety.

  • Council's decision on the proposal is expected next Thursday.

A Looming Crisis in Aged Care

Reports indicate that 300 local aged care workers may face job losses if the City of Greater Geelong proceeds with its plans to eliminate the Home Support Program.

Proposed Changes

Council officers have suggested replacing the Home Care Package Program with a new initiative called Support at Home, set to begin on 1 July 2025. Additionally, the Commonwealth Home Support Program is expected to transition no sooner than 2027.

Urgent Consultations

Staff were briefed about these changes on Wednesday morning. A crucial meeting is scheduled for next Thursday, where councillors will vote on the proposal.

Zoe Edwards, Deputy Branch Secretary at the Australian Services Union, expressed concern that it seems the Council is determined to push this plan forward. “It looks like Council has already made the decision, and are seeking to just rubber stamp that next week at a council meeting,” she stated.

Impact on Services and Workers

Aged care workers have been given just eight days to participate in the consultation process. Ms. Edwards emphasized the importance of these services, which include personal care, grooming, toileting, and in-home support like cleaning—essential services that help keep vulnerable individuals safe in their homes.

She warned that the Geelong council plans to abruptly withdraw from these services, with some expected to cease as early as May.

Recommendations from Reviews

An independent review of aged care reforms recommended that all in-home community care clients be transitioned to specialized local providers.

City of Greater Geelong Chief Executive Ali Wastie acknowledged that the council carefully considered the best options for their clients, stating, “Our aim is to ensure our community is provided the best possible service to its ageing population, and this has always been the core priority of our community care service.” She assured that they are committed to supporting staff and clients through any transition, although the Council's final decision remains uncertain.
