The woman was interviewed by Getahead, a jobs app that has gone viral online for asking people to share details about their jobs and salaries. She owns a recruitment agency specializing in property development and construction.
What Recruitment Professionals Earn
While she didn't disclose her own earnings, the agency boss shared that recruitment can be an incredibly high-paying industry to enter.
"Someone getting into recruitment, base salary should be around $70,000 to $80,000 and then your commissions on top of that. A decent recruiter in their first year can make up to around $120,000," she explained.
Recruiters typically earn a base salary plus commission, with their earning potential tied to how successfully they place candidates with hiring companies. Commissions can be flat fees or a percentage of the candidate's total fixed remuneration, often ranging from 15% to 25%.
Industry Salary Benchmarks
According to job platform SEEK, the average recruitment consultant salary in Australia is $83,000 per year, with a range of $75,000 to $90,000.
Glassdoor data shows the average base salary for recruiters is $70,000 annually (ranging from $62,000 to $80,000), with additional compensation averaging $20,000 through commission payments (ranging from $10,000 to $40,000).
No Formal Qualifications Required
Recruitment is one industry where you don't necessarily need any formal qualifications.
"A sales background helps. You don't need any qualifications, nothing like that. It's a very fast turnaround in terms of commissions and very lucrative industry," the woman emphasized.
Challenges to Consider
When it comes to the downsides of the job, the woman noted it can be challenging dealing with "unreliable people."
"You think a deal is about to go through, then someone pulls out. Your income is not guaranteed. So you've just got to be consistent and keep going, and eventually it balances out," she advised.
In the recruitment industry, she highlighted that "your network is your net worth," sharing that she started in the property industry herself before moving into recruitment in that space.
