From Kangaroo Valley to Silicon Valley: Samantha Wellington, eBay's senior vice president and chief legal officer, shares her remarkable journey from aspiring actress to top US tech executive. Over lunch at Sydney's China Doll, she discusses navigating Trump's trade turmoil, the rise of AI, and how her acting background gives her an edge in corporate America.
Wellington, who grew up on a beef farm in regional NSW, now leads a department of hundreds of lawyers and lobbyists at the global online marketplace. She credits her acting training for her success: "Acting is all about human psychology, and corporate America is actually just about human psychology as well."
From Farscape to Foxtel
After studying acting and law at Wollongong University, Wellington pursued acting, landing a bit part on the cult sci-fi show Farscape. But she soon realized the instability of an acting career. "99 per cent of actors are unemployed," she says. She switched to law, taking a legal counsel role at Foxtel, which felt connected to the TV industry.
The Oracle Years
Wellington's desire to live in San Francisco led her to Oracle, where she spent 12 years. She became an expert in global expansion and integration, handling the integration of Oracle's $10 billion hostile takeover of PeopleSoft. Her reputation grew, and the company created a global expansion role for her when she moved to the US.
Navigating Trump's Trade Policies
Now at eBay, Wellington deals with the chaos of Donald Trump's second presidency, including changes to de minimis rules and tariffs. "It's a hard environment to be working in," she says, noting that customs and postal services struggled to adapt.
AI Disruption and the Legal Profession
Wellington is optimistic about AI's impact on law. She believes AI-native younger recruits will show law firms how to redesign processes, while mid-career middle managers are more at risk. She warns against losing core skills like writing: "The more that I use AI and don't keep that skill set sharp, I risk losing it."
