Breaking the Mold: High-Earning Apprentice Electrician Shares Her Story

An apprentice electrician working for Queensland Rail has revealed how she's earning an impressive $100,000 a year in her second year on the job. This is a stark contrast to the typical apprentice wages, which are often much lower.

The Secret to Her Lucrative Wage

The apprentice shared that her rotational roster, including night shifts and overtime, significantly boosts her income. "We do a rotational roster, so two weeks of day shift, a week of night shift. The night shift is where you make a lot of your money," she explained.

Additionally, her work in high-voltage substations commands higher pay due to the high-risk nature of the job. "I’m in substations, which you also earn a bit more because it’s high-risk work," she said.

Government Job Perks

Working for the government also has its advantages. She enjoys more freedom and a less hectic schedule compared to private sector jobs. "[It’s] not super busy, you don’t get run into the ground like a lot of other domestic sparkies out there," she noted.

Challenges and Rewards

Being the only female in her current role presents its own set of challenges, but she remains undeterred. Balancing her TAFE course with work requires extra study, but she believes the effort is worth it.

"Your apprenticeship’s like a four-year interview. Show them that you’re keen and you'll likely get a job," she advised.

How Her Salary Stacks Up

Her $100,000 salary is much higher than the average apprentice wage. For comparison, second-year sparkies typically earn around $32,220 a year, according to the Electrical Trades Union. Her night shift and roster work explain the significant difference.

What Others Are Saying

Many were surprised by her earnings, with other apprentices sharing their wages:

  • "I’m second year and get 39k."
  • "I'm 3rd year and get 48k."
