Westpac Slashes 250 Jobs: Is AI Really to Blame? The Shocking Truth Behind Australia's Banking Bloodbath

Westpac Cuts 250 Jobs Amid Tech Overhaul

Westpac has announced it will cut approximately 250 jobs this month, with 140 positions going this week alone. This marks the second major round of job losses at an Australian bank this week, following NAB's announcement to axe 2,500 jobs.

A Westpac spokesperson told nine.com.au that the workforce changes are due to investment priorities and customer habits, not AI. "The shape of our workforce changes according to the investment priorities of the Group. While we continue to invest in extra bankers, digital delivery and customer-facing roles, other programs may be completing or require fewer resources," the spokesperson said.

The company has pledged to offer support and assistance to redundant staff.

NAB's Massive Restructure

The Westpac cuts come in the same week that NAB announced plans to axe 2,500 jobs as it battles "more challenging economic conditions." NAB CEO Andrew Irvine said, "We know this will be a difficult period for our colleagues impacted by these changes as well as the people around them. We will treat every person with dignity and respect."

A Pattern of Job Cuts Across Big Banks

The Australian banking sector has seen a wave of job cuts since last year:

  • NAB previously cut 400 jobs.
  • ANZ cut about 100 jobs in New Zealand in September and plans to axe 3,500 jobs by September 2026.
  • CBA shed about 172 jobs.

Offshore Expansion

As domestic jobs are cut, banks are expanding their offshore workforce. According to the Australian Financial Review, ANZ has about 11,500 staff in the Philippines and India, representing 30% of its workforce. CBA and NAB are also growing their presence in India, with NAB preparing to hire 1,000 staff in India and Vietnam.

Union Slams Cuts

Nicole McPherson, National Assistant Secretary of the Financial Services Union, criticised the cuts, claiming they are part of a move to introduce AI into the companies. "All banks need to look at the bigger picture and see their employees as more than just numbers on a balance sheet. They are people with families who support other people with families and the value they bring to a company can never be fully replaced by a machine," she said.

What This Means for Job Seekers

With major banks shedding jobs and shifting roles overseas, job security in Australia's banking sector is becoming more uncertain. However, banks are still investing in digital delivery and customer-facing roles, so opportunities remain for those with the right skills. Keep an eye on emerging trends and consider upskilling in technology and customer service to stay competitive.
