Job Description

"The best marketing doesn't feel like marketing."

Tom Fishburne

Spring has sprung in Sydney, and to match the warmer weather we have a brand new, exclusive and very hot role from one of Big Wave Digital's premier client partners.

Most marketers spend their careers trying to build an audience. This role hands you one on day one.

Our client is a Sydney-founded tech platform that has grown quietly into a serious international business, operating across several markets with a subscriber base that runs into the millions. That list is their largest marketing channel by a wide margin, and right now it is being used as a broadcast. A monthly send goes out, the numbers come back, and nobody has yet had the time or the mandate to ask what this audience could really do. That is the job.

The role

You will join a small growth team, reporting to the Head of Growth, and take full ownership of subscriber activation. The word ownership matters here. You will set the strategy for the list, decide how it should be segmented, work out which tests to run and in what order, and then build every piece of it yourself. There is no separate team to hand the copy to and no one else to press send. You plan it, write it, build it, check it and ship it, and then you read the data and decide what happens next month.

Two audiences sit inside the base: business customers who use the platform to run their operations, and consumers who interact with it on the other side. They want different things, they respond to different messages, and they have mostly been receiving the same email. Splitting them properly, and building the lifecycle programme that follows from that, is the first big piece of work.

In practice you will:

Own the monthly newsletter end to end, from content planning and copywriting through design coordination, build, QA and send.

Lift open rates, click-through and conversion through structured, documented testing, and be able to show the numbers that prove it.

Design and launch the lifecycle layer: onboarding sequences, triggered sends, re-engagement and win-back for subscribers who have gone quiet.

Report on subscriber performance every month in a way the leadership team can act on.

Support product launches with EDMs and press releases, translating product updates into communications that land with each audience.

Contribute to SEO and AEO content, case studies and the occasional brand or partnership campaign when the growth team needs an extra pair of hands.

The newsletter is the centre of the role and should take most of your week. Everything else is secondary and the team is honest about that.

Who this suits

You have three to five years in lifecycle, CRM or email marketing and you have owned a list, not just written for one. You know the difference between a campaign and a programme. You are fluent in at least one serious ESP, whether that is HubSpot, Klaviyo, Braze, Mailgun or something comparable, and you can move into a new platform without much fuss. You track performance through GA4 or similar and you are comfortable pulling your own numbers rather than waiting for someone to send them.

You write well. That means clean, persuasive copy that reads differently for a business audience than it does for a consumer, and it means using AI tools to get to a first draft quickly so you can spend your time on the thinking. You know enough HTML and CSS to open a broken template and fix it. And you are organised enough to run a fixed monthly production cycle while ad-hoc requests land around it, because in a small team they always do.

A word on fit. If your background is social media, PR or content creation and email has been something you did on the side, this is not the role for you and it would be a frustrating one. If you have spent the last few years thinking about deliverability, segmentation, send-time testing and what actually makes a subscriber click, it is exactly the role for you and there are very few like it in Sydney.

What you get

Full-time, based in Sydney, four days in the office and one flexible. Up to $100k plus super and benefits, depending on experience. A profitable company that is growing internationally, a Head of Growth who wants you to run this channel rather than manage it for them, and a list large enough that a two per cent lift in open rate is a genuinely big number.

What's next ...

Send your CV along with two or three results you are proud of from a list you have run. Open rate, click-through, conversion, retention, anything with a number attached. A short paragraph on what you would do first with a multi-million subscriber base would not hurt either.
