Job Description

Posted on: July 8, 2026

The Bureau's Antarctic services are a specialised stream within the Environmental Prediction Services Program, which sits within the Community Services Group. Our primary focus is to provide weather and ice information that enables the safe and efficient running of the Australian Antarctic Division's (AAD) marine, land and aviation activities. Other customers come from a range of Business Solutions Group (BSG) priority sectors and community and emergency services. At our core, we are a team of five weather and ice experts who together lead service enhancements, develop and deliver competency training, conduct stakeholder engagement and deliver services. A further five meteorologists are engaged temporarily to our program every summer and become embedded into the Australian Antarctic expedition to deliver critical decision support services. The Technical Lead role is accountable for providing specialist technical leadership to support the delivery and continuous improvement of Antarctic Weather and Ice services. To be successful in this role, you will require a deep understanding of Antarctic weather and ice services, have a proven commitment to excellence in collaboration and building partnerships, and display a curiosity on the evolving Bureau landscape for service provision. The role reports to the Team Lead for Antarctic Services. This is mostly a non-shiftwork role. However, the successful candidate will at times be required to work outside of standard business hours or on on-call arrangements, either during peak operational periods or to engage with international colleagues and programs who operate across different time zones. Subject to AAD clearances, the successful candidate will have opportunity to carry out their duties in Antarctica.
