Job Description

Posted on: July 13, 2026

The Water Regulations and Standards Section support the Bureau's fundamental role under the Water Act 2007 and Water Regulations 2008 to lead and administer the collection, management and sharing of national water information. As a regulator, the Bureau works with water data providers and data users to ensure efficient data provision, minimal regulatory burden and public availability of valuable water data and information. The Bureau leverages its position as a national, independent organisation and collaborates across jurisdictions to inform water reform, provide national water information leadership and drive the standardisation and harmonisation of national water data. The Water Regulations Officer contributes to the administration of the Commonwealth Water Regulations 2008 and national water information standards. The role supports the management and governance of Australia's water data in a way that enables good decision-making and delivers verified value and impact to the Australian community. The role requires demonstrated experience in monitoring regulatory practices and in following and maintaining procedures, policies and guidelines to ensure ongoing compliance and alignment with relevant legislative and governance frameworks. The successful candidate will be integral to developing and maintaining productive relationships with data providers and users. They will support the Section in building and maintaining a trusted network of peers among Regulators, policy departments and regulated entities to support the Bureau's vision for the development and implementation of water information standards and regulations. The role also builds and maintains internal awareness and support across the Bureau for the delivery of its regulatory responsibilities, working closely with technical and subject matter experts to identify opportunities to align Bureau capabilities with national water data and information requirements. The Water Regulations Officer is self-motivated and agile, thriving in a setting where priorities evolve, regulatory frameworks are complex and sound judgement is required to interpret and apply legislation effectively. They work collaboratively with diverse teams and can quickly pivot to new tasks and initiatives in response to organisational priorities. The role suits someone who enjoys problem solving and on-the-job learning, communicates confidently and demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning in data governance and regulatory practice. This role is part of a national team dedicated to ensuring that the long-term interests of the Australian community are met through the effective delivery of the objects of the Water Act, and that the communities trust in the Bureau's water function is maintained.
