Job Description

Posted on: August 26, 2026

The APS6 Workforce Strategy and Analytics Adviser in the Organisational Strategy team is critical to delivering Treasury’s workforce strategies and commitments, both internally and across government. The role supports how Treasury uses workforce data and insights to inform strategic decision-making and deliver high-priority workforce initiatives.

The Organisational Strategy team acts as the project management office for the APS Employee Census and Strategic Workforce Plan (SWP) delivery. The team delivers twice-yearly updates on Treasury’s Workforce Intelligence and leads delivery of the Treasury Location Plan and other SWP initiatives. The team works across the People and Organisational Strategy Branch and the broader department to deliver high-quality workforce reporting, support strategic workforce planning, and contribute to initiatives that strengthen Treasury’s workforce management.

The responsibilities of the APS6 Adviser may vary across the work of the Organisational Strategy team.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic workforce planning and delivery

  • Contribute to the delivery of the Strategic Workforce Plan (SWP), including coordination and delivery of key actions such as the Location Plan and People Architecture Program, including position management.
  • Translate strategic objectives into practical work plans and deliverables. Clearly link organisational goals to operational tasks and outputs.
  • Gather, research and analyse information from diverse sources to identify trends, broader influences and workforce risks. Provide evidence based advice to inform decision making.

Workforce reporting, analytics and insights

  • Deliver complex workforce reporting and analysis on strategic workforce objectives, trends, demographics and performance for senior leadership. Ensure outputs are accurate, logically structured and aligned to business needs.
  • Deliver SES workforce reporting, meet Australian Public Service Commission requirements, prepare organisational charts, and respond to ad hoc data requests, while progressing the SES profile project to improve senior workforce insights.
  • Lead the coordination of major reporting and input into parliamentary processes (including Annual Report, Agency Survey, Corporate Plan, Senate Estimate briefings and Questions on Notice), ensuring data is integrated, aligned and delivered on time.
  • Use data and analysis to develop clear, well structured narratives for decision makers. Select appropriate levels of detail and limiting unnecessary jargon. Progress work with minimal reliance on additional supervision or rework.

Program and stakeholder management

  • Support program management and analysis for staff surveys, including the APS Employee Census. Deliver to agreed timeframes through effective planning, managing competing priorities and milestone management.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with stakeholders across the branch and department. Anticipate needs, provide timely and professional advice, and keep stakeholders informed.
  • Maintain clear audit trails.
  • Progress delegated tasks through to completion and deadline. Seek feedback to ensure outputs meet expectations.

Key skills and competencies

Technical

  • Experience contributing to workforce analytics, reporting and/or strategic workforce planning activities, including complex reporting for senior leaders.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Research and interpret information, identify issues, assess risks and draw sound conclusions.
  • High attention to detail and strong process discipline.
  • Strong planning and prioritisation skills. Set clear plans and timeframes, monitor progress, and escalate or adjust priorities as demands change.
  • Ability to understand delegated tasks and translate them into clear next steps. Progress work with a high level of autonomy while delivering to agreed scope, timeframes and quality standards.
  • Strong written communication skills. Prepare clear, concise and well structured briefs and communications tailored to the audience.

Personal

  • Demonstrates accountability and self management. Takes responsibility for timely and delivery and follows through on commitments.
  • Model integrity and professionalism in line with APS Values and Code of Conduct.
  • Build productive working relationships. Listens actively, shares information appropriately and contributes as an effective team member.
  • Operate effectively in ambiguity and change. Applies judgement to progress work and supporting adaptation through clear communication.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to learning and contributes to a collaborative team environment. Reflects on performance, seeks feedback and continuously improves capability and ways of working.
