ERA will be a new Commonwealth entity commencing operations on 1 December 2026 which will bring together functions from the FRC, Australian Accounting Standards Board (AASB) and Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (AUASB). A Governing Council will oversee three technical standard-setting boards responsible for day-to-day standard-setting activities in relation to accounting, auditing and assurance and sustainability standards.

Applicants must meet the definition of ‘External Reporting Australia eligible representative’ within the meaning of sections 3 and 9 of the Treasury Laws Amendment (Financial Reporting System Reform) Act 2026 and meet other relevant skills requirements.

Selection criteria

Successful applicants will demonstrate, at a senior level:

  • Understanding of the needs of users and the external reporting environment (internationally and domestically) in the for-profit, not-for-profit or public sectors.
  • Ability to apply technical and/or research knowledge to practical issues on accounting, auditing and assurance or sustainability matters, including impacts across large or smaller entities and practitioners.
  • Ability to balance strategic and policy considerations with technical issues.
  • Appreciation of the importance of acting in the public interest.
  • Understanding of ERA’s functions and powers as set out in the ASIC Act, including the broader objects of the financial reporting system (see section 224 and the Treasury Laws Amendment (Financial Reporting System Reform) Act 2026) and ERA’s function of issuing internationally aligned locally relevant standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to work as a collegiate board member, respecting differing points of view.
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong networks and relationships.
  • Capacity to contribute effectively to board deliberations and commit sufficient time to board activities.

In addition to the above, applicants for Chair roles should demonstrate:

  • Senior level of experience as a preparer or user of reports.
