The Royal Hobart Hospital is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for multiple fixed term part time Staff Specialist - Emergency Medicine vacancies.
- Provide specialist emergency care to public and private patients attending the Emergency Department (ED) at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).
- Be involved in research and quality improvement activities, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at RHH.
- Provide specialist advice to inpatient units as required.
Who are we? Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s largest hospital and major referral centre. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH collaborates with the University of Tasmania and other institutions. All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community. The Emergency Department (ED) provides a tertiary level service for people with illness or injury 24 hours a day 7 days per week. Our busy ED provides care for >75,000 patients annually with an admission rate of more than 35% and a paediatric case load of 20%. The RHH Emergency Department has a co-located Emergency Medical Unit (EMU) which is a short stay ward for patients requiring a brief hospital stay (generally less than 24 hours). The EMU has 28 short-stay beds operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with a high turnover ward environment and a variety of clinical presentations. - Medical care of ED patients.
- Undertake procedures as required in ED.
- Participate in after hours on call roster.
Teaching:
- Undertake undergraduate clinical teaching at RHH.
- Provide supervision and training of post graduate trainees.
Research:
- Maintain involvement in research activities
Administrative and Quality Improvement:
- Provide administrative and quality improvement functions for units as required
- Work closely with corresponding nursing staff and support staff in the ED.
- Participation in disaster preparedness planning.
Actively participate in and contribute to the organisation’s Quality & Safety and Work Health & Safety processes, including in the development and implementation of safety systems, improvement initiatives, safeguarding practices for vulnerable people, and related training. The incumbent can expect to be allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, that are within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying positions at this classification level. Make It Tasmania | Move for a great lifestyle Salary Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority. Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $216,300 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $296,640 with further salary increments available.
- Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 - $310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award
Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022 In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:
- Allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $28,786 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
- Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,974 pro rata per annum.
- On call allowance % of Base Salary.
- All other allowances as per current Award.
- And subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on-call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

Details of Appointment Multiple fixed term part-time day work (with on-call) vacancies available, working up to 57 hours per fortnight commencing as soon as possible until 2 January 2028. Essential Requirements
- Holds specialist registration; or
- Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway
- Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.
