Founded in 2021 by Garry and Kate Putland in memory of Dr Sophie Putland, Sophie’s Legacy is a charitable organisation dedicated to supporting veterinary staff and addressing the mental health crisis within the veterinary profession. Through education, advocacy and collaboration, the organisation is working to create a safer and more sustainable future for the people who care for our animals. In a relatively short time, Sophie’s Legacy has helped drive significant awareness and policy change, including contributing to parliamentary inquiries and national conversations on veterinary wellbeing.
Driven by its vision to Save the People who Save our Animals, the organisation now seeks to appoint an Executive Officer. Reporting to the Board, this leadership role will be responsible for implementing the organisation’s strategic direction, overseeing day-to-day operations, supporting a small team of staff and volunteers, and advancing Sophie’s Legacy’s advocacy, education and awareness initiatives. Key responsibilities:
- provide operational leadership and manage the day-to-day activities of the organisation;
- work closely with the experienced skills-based Board to implement strategic priorities, support governance processes, and identify emerging risks and opportunities;
- lead public awareness, education and advocacy activities, engaging with industry stakeholders, government and the broader community;
- oversee organisational performance, financial management, reporting, risk and compliance activities;
- build and maintain relationships with supporters, partners and key stakeholders;
- provide oversight of fundraising, partnership development and organisational sustainability initiatives.
Applications are encouraged from leaders with a background in not-for-profit, community, health, advocacy or related sectors. Experience working with Boards, managing operations, governance, stakeholder engagement and financial oversight will be highly regarded. Strong communication skills, sound judgement and the ability to work independently are essential.
The successful candidate will be a proactive and self-driven professional with the ability to balance strategic thinking and hands-on delivery. You will build effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders and be motivated by the opportunity to create meaningful change. Experience or an affinity with the veterinary, mental health or wellbeing sectors will be well regarded.
The role will require the incumbent to work from home and is offered as part-time (0.6 FTE), commencing initially on a 12 month contract with longer term potential.
