AI Takes Over: Commonwealth Bank Cuts 45 Jobs in Favor of Automation

Australia’s largest company, Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), is making headlines again, this time for replacing 45 call center jobs with artificial intelligence (AI). The Finance Sector Union (FSU) has raised concerns over the move, highlighting the growing trend of AI replacing human roles in the workforce.

The Shift to AI and Offshoring

The bank is introducing a new voice bot system to handle customer inquiries, leading to the elimination of these positions. Additionally, another 45 jobs are being moved offshore to CBA India, where the bank is recruiting for customer messaging roles. This marks a significant moment as it's the first instance a bank has directly attributed job cuts to AI implementation.

Union Outrage and Customer Impact

FSU’s national secretary, Julia Angrisano, expressed strong disapproval, stating, “Workers want a tech-savvy bank, but they expect to be part of the change, not replaced by it.” She emphasized the potential decline in service quality for Australian customers and the human cost of such decisions. “There is a human cost to this. You can’t just replace frontline jobs with a voice bot and expect the same service for customers,” Angrisano added.

CBA’s Stance

A CBA spokesperson defended the decision, stating that AI investments aim to streamline customer service, allowing staff to focus on more complex queries requiring empathy and experience. The bank also mentioned efforts to redeploy affected employees and provide upskilling opportunities.

Broader Implications

This development follows previous disputes between the FSU and CBA, including allegations of contract breaches due to offshoring and recent job cuts in the bank's technology division. The ongoing tension underscores the broader debate on AI's role in the workforce and its impact on employment.
