Gold Rush 2.0: Western Australia's Mining Sector Set to Create 2,400 New Jobs as Gold Prices Soar

Western Australia's Shifting Mining Landscape

While iron ore has long dominated Western Australia's resources sector, new data reveals the gold industry is poised to create significantly more jobs in the coming years.

Gold Sector Outpacing Iron Ore in Job Creation

A recent report from the Australian Resources & Energy Employer Association (AREEA) projects 9,000 new workers will be needed to support WA's resources economy over the next five years, with the gold sector emerging as a standout performer.

Key statistics reveal:

  • 2,400 new gold mining jobs forecast in Western Australia
  • Only 1,200 new iron ore jobs projected during same period
  • 11 new gold projects currently in the pipeline
  • Australia produced 300 tonnes of gold worth $50 billion last financial year

Economic Drivers Behind the Gold Boom

The surge in gold investment comes as the precious metal's value has increased by more than 50% over the past 18 months, recently reaching record highs of $US3,764 per ounce. This price surge has created strong appetite for new gold projects across the state.

Expert Analysis: Gold's Rising Importance

University of Western Australia Business School Professor Allan Trench explained the shifting dynamics: "The relative balance of power has moved towards gold, just given the massively greater interest and new investment in gold, given the high prices of the last one-to-two years, and particularly this year."

While acknowledging iron ore's continued dominance in export revenues and royalty receipts ($10 billion versus $1 billion for gold), Dr. Trench noted that gold's rapid price increases could significantly boost its economic contribution.

Major Projects Driving Employment

Several significant gold projects are contributing to the job growth forecast, including the Hemi gold mine in the Pilbara and the expansion of Kalgoorlie's Super Pit, which recently gained approval for an 800-bed worker camp to support operations.

AREEA industry director Tom Reid cautioned that while iron ore project numbers have decreased, the sector still requires substantial workforce: "Iron ore has dropped down in terms of the number of projects — there're only four in this year's report — but that still will require about 1,200 workers."

"It's not really a downturn in WA, but just a little bit of a shot across the bow, a warning signal, that we need to look at things like regulatory red tape approvals process."

Regional Perspectives on the Mining Shift

In established iron ore communities like Paraburdoo, long-time resident Linton Rumble noted that iron ore towns remain somewhat insulated from industry fluctuations. However, he expressed skepticism about gold replacing iron ore as the primary economic driver in his region.

Meanwhile, in the heart of WA's gold country, confidence is running high. City of Kalgoorlie Boulder deputy mayor Kirsty Dellar emphasized the positive impact of gold sector growth: "More jobs means more families choosing to live and invest and contribute within our community. It drives the education and training — we have the School of Mines here in Kalgoorlie — so I believe it provides confidence and drives a positive high through the entire region."
