Graduates Navigate a Tightening Job Market: Strategies for Success
The graduate job market is undergoing significant changes, with new data indicating a slowdown in hiring. Despite this, graduates who take proactive steps can still secure promising opportunities.
Recent trends show a contraction in graduate job postings, with a 24% decrease last year compared to 2023, and an additional 16% drop in early 2025. This shift marks the end of the unprecedented growth seen during the pandemic years.
However, the situation isn't all bleak. According to Callum Pickering, Indeed’s senior economist for Asia and the Pacific, the market hasn't crashed. "The growth in graduate jobs through the pandemic was unprecedented. It more than doubled over a couple of years. However, there has been a significant contraction in the number of jobs being posted," Pickering noted.
Federal government data from the Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) reveals that while most graduates find employment soon after graduation, it can take up to three years for some to secure full-time positions and establish their careers. For instance, 70% of 2020 bachelor's degree graduates found full-time jobs within four to six months, a figure that rose to 92.5% within three years.
Lisa Bolton, director of QILT Research and Strategy at ANU’s Social Research Centre, highlights that employer demand plays a crucial role in graduate employment outcomes. "It’s also worth noting that different universities operate in different job markets and have different course and student profiles," Bolton said.
Global economic uncertainties, such as those driven by US President Donald Trump’s tariffs agenda, are adding to business hesitancy, further impacting hiring decisions. Graduate recruitment is unique in its long lag time—sometimes six months or more—between the hiring process and the candidate's start date, making it a reflection of employers' economic expectations.
For graduates, the key to success lies in research, networking, and leveraging unique strengths. As the market tightens, those who tailor their approach to the evolving landscape will find themselves at an advantage.
