Is Your Job at Risk? 1 in 4 Australian Roles Face High Automation Threat by 2030
The Automation Wave: How AI and Robotics Are Reshaping Australia's Job Market
New research from Pearson reveals that one in four Australian jobs are at high risk of automation, driven by advancements in robotic processes, chatbots, and AI models. This shift is transforming tasks once handled by humans, with AI alone projected to impact up to 1.5 million jobs by 2030.
Industries like retail, finance, and media are already feeling the effects, as the nature of work evolves rapidly. A growing skills gap is making it difficult for Australians to keep pace, potentially leading to a "skills chasm" that could hinder economic growth.

Workers who fail to upskill could face significant financial losses, as current employee capabilities often don't align with employer needs. Taha Haidermota, Pearson's country head, emphasizes that while jobs may change, they aren't necessarily eliminated—they're transformed. Adaptability is key, with those who reskill to work alongside AI likely to thrive and see wage growth of up to 12% within two years.
The skills gap is already causing challenges in job transitions, leading to lost income and reduced well-being, and costing Australia's economy up to $104 billion annually. To future-proof careers, Pearson recommends prioritizing upskilling, embracing "learning to learn," and moving away from linear career paths.

Employers are urged to provide upskilling opportunities through training or education, focusing on in-demand skills like collaboration, customer focus, and cultural intelligence. The era of one-time education leading to a lifelong career is over; Australians must embrace career pivots and non-traditional paths to stay relevant in an automated world.
