Major Australian Banks Slash Hundreds of Jobs in Rapid Restructuring Wave

NAB Announces Over 400 Job Cuts
NAB has confirmed plans to cut more than 400 jobs, following a similar move by ANZ Bank just a day earlier. A spokesperson stated, "Like many businesses, we regularly look at the way we work and how we're structured to deliver the best experience we can for our customers." They emphasized that the changing operational environment necessitates having the right structures, skills, and capabilities in the right locations to better serve customers.
These decisions are described as difficult, with the bank acknowledging the impact on colleagues. Affected staff are being offered support, redeployment options, and career transition services. On the topic of offshore roles, NAB defended its global workforce strategy, saying it helps generate better outcomes by leveraging global time zones to extend hours of operation, speed up processes, and improve turnaround times for customers.
Union Response and Broader Industry Trends
Wendy Streets, National President of the Finance Sector Union (FSU), criticized the cuts in a statement: "Cuts this deep don't just hurt staff, they hollow out services for customers and communities who rely on NAB." She added, "Two banks in two days slashing jobs, it's shameful. This isn't one rogue bank, it's the whole sector driving the same agenda at the expense of workers and communities."
Job Cuts Across Australian Banks
- ANZ Bank recently announced a major restructure that will cut approximately 3,500 employees by September 2026 and reduce the use of consultants.
- Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) made workforce changes earlier this year as part of its AI adoption but has since reversed some of those layoffs. The bank was also accused by the FSU of offshoring over a hundred roles to India, allegations that CBA refuted.
This wave of job reductions highlights ongoing shifts in the banking sector, driven by factors like technological adoption and global operational strategies.
