The New Reality for Working Parents
As more families find themselves with both parents working full-time, the push from employers for a return to the office is creating significant challenges for parents of young children. A recent report highlights the urgent need for an overhaul of outside school hours care to better support these families.
Thanh Whittam, who returned to full-time work in February last year after over a decade of part-time employment, exemplifies the struggle many parents face. With three children, she balances her work commitments by often working from home. This arrangement allows her to pick her children up from Matraville Public School by 3 PM. To compensate for the hours she misses during the day, she logs back on to work between 9 PM and 11 PM.
This scenario is increasingly common among working parents, emphasizing the need for flexible work arrangements and adequate childcare solutions to help them manage their responsibilities effectively.
