Peanut Butter Crisis: 150 Jobs at Risk as Bega Group Shuts Down Historic Queensland Plant

More than 150 jobs are under threat after Bega Group announced its decision to phase out the operations of the Peanut Company of Australia (PCA), marking the end of nearly 100 years of peanut processing in Kingaroy, Queensland. This move comes after a 12-month strategic review and years of financial struggles.

The End of an Era

Bega Group revealed plans for a gradual shutdown of PCA's facilities in Kingaroy and Tolga over the next 18 months. The decision stems from sustained financial losses, despite significant investments aimed at revitalizing the business. "PCA had been under financial pressure for several years," the company stated, highlighting the inability to establish a sustainable business model.

Financial and Industry Challenges

The peanut processing business has been operating at a loss of $5-10 million annually, with anticipated shutdown costs mirroring this range. Bega cited growing challenges in the Australian peanut industry, including import competition, rising costs, and declining production, as key factors behind the decision.

Support for Affected Employees

Bega has committed to providing support services, redeployment incentives, and redundancy packages for the approximately 150 employees affected by the closure. Some staff will remain during the wind-down period to assist with the transition.

A Blow to Kingaroy's Heritage

Kingaroy has been the heart of Australia's peanut industry since 1924, with PCA's heritage-listed peanut silos standing as a local landmark. The closure has been met with disappointment, described as a "deeply disappointing blow" by local officials, highlighting the cultural and economic significance of the industry to the region.

Looking Ahead

While PCA's operations wind down, Bega will continue its presence in Queensland through facilities in Crestmead and Malanda, maintaining its distribution network across the state.
