Young Employees Hide AI Usage Amid Job Security Fears

AI in the Workplace

Despite the widespread use of AI in the workplace, about 50% of young employees are hesitant to admit how much of their work is actually powered by AI. This reluctance stems from a fear that AI could replace their jobs, with 47% of respondents expressing this concern. The anxiety is not unfounded, as previous predictions suggest that AI will significantly impact entry-level work and expose millions of jobs worldwide to risk.

Generational Perspectives on AI

  • 40% of Gen Zs and 38% of Millennials believe that AI will replace certain job roles but also create new opportunities in the next two to three years.

Shadow Tech in Workplaces

The covert use of AI and personal apps by employees can lead to potential cyber risks, including data leaks and losses. A staggering 63% of young employees admit to using personal apps or software for work without their employers' knowledge. The reasons? 42% of Gen Zs and 54% of Millennials find their personal tools faster and easier to use.

Overwhelmed by Tech Tools

Despite 86% of young employees feeling confident in adopting new technology, 69% report feeling overwhelmed by the number of tools they're expected to use. This highlights a disconnect between the tools provided by employers and the preferences of their younger workforce.

A Call for Better Tech Strategies

Jeff Breaux, executive vice president and chief commercial officer for Cox Communications, emphasizes the opportunity for companies to realign their tech strategies. "This presents a tremendous opportunity for companies and their IT teams to enhance their strategies around tech investment, rollouts, training, and policies; ensuring they meet the evolving needs of a workforce that is rapidly becoming the majority," Breaux said.
