Boating Careers and the Boating Industry Association of Victoria (BIAV) have formed an exciting new partnership with the Australian College of Pioneers (ACP) to attract and support international students eager to build a career in the Australian boating industry.

Boating Careers

This initiative marks a significant milestone for the marine sector as ACP becomes the first RTO in Australia to offer the MEM40222 Certificate IV in Boating Services specifically for international students. The program's inaugural intake is scheduled to begin on April 28th, paving the way for a new talent pipeline for marine employers nationwide.

A Game-Changer for Workforce Development

Designed to tackle the marine industry’s critical skills shortages, this program aims to not only supply skilled international workers but also support domestic students already engaged in the industry who may be pursuing non-industry related courses. Dan Brown, Manager Education and Industry Skills at BIAV, stated:

"This initiative simplifies the process for businesses looking to take on international workers in the boating industry. It provides an immediate solution to workforce shortages while we continue to work on broader skills development strategies for the sector."

Key Program Benefits for Industry

  • Access to skilled, motivated international workers.
  • Tailored training focused on boat building, repair and maintenance, welding, and marine services.
  • The first program of its kind in Australia for the boating sector.
  • Work-based training requirement providing 540 hours of unpaid workplace experience.
  • Flexible working arrangements (24 hours per week during study, full-time in breaks).
  • Skills assessment pathway post-course, offering a route to Australian permanent residency for graduates.
  • Increased retention of skilled workers, requiring graduates to work a minimum of 1700 hours during training and an additional 2 years for skills assessment.

Pathway to Permanent Residency

A standout feature of this program is that international graduates will be eligible to apply for a skills assessment upon completion, enabling them to explore permanent residency options. This initiative not only helps retain essential marine skills within Australia but also offers stability for both students and employers.

Students who complete the Cert IV in Boating Services will be prepared for various marine roles, including:

  • Boat Building & Repairs
  • Marine Maintenance
  • Boat Manufacturing & Production
  • Welding & Fabrication
  • Marina & Boatyard Operations
  • Sales & Customer Service Roles
  • Team Leader or Supervisor Positions

A Win-Win for Employers

This program presents a direct solution for marine businesses facing challenges in finding and retaining skilled workers, especially those already employing international students. Employers can now enroll these workers in a qualification that aligns perfectly with their daily tasks in the marine industry.
