Westpac Announces Major Workforce Reduction: Over 1,500 Jobs to Be Cut in Operational Overhaul

Westpac Banking Corp is set to reduce its workforce by more than 1,500 employees as part of a strategic move to meet cost-reduction targets and simplify operations, according to a report by the Australian Financial Review. This decision is a component of the bank's 2023 UNITE programme, aimed at streamlining technology systems, modernizing infrastructure, and reducing long-term operational costs.

As of September 30, 2024, Westpac employed 35,240 people globally. The bank has stated that it regularly adjusts its workforce based on shifting investment priorities but has not confirmed the exact number of jobs to be cut. "While we continue to invest in extra bankers and customer-facing roles, other programs and initiatives may need fewer resources," a Westpac spokesperson mentioned.
The Finance Sector Union (FSU) has raised concerns over the potential job cuts, urging Westpac to halt any plans for reductions and to engage in immediate discussions. The union emphasized the contributions of its members to the bank's profitability, arguing against job cuts for the sake of cost savings.
This development highlights the ongoing challenges within the banking sector to balance operational efficiency with workforce stability.
