About the Agency

As the steward for digitally enabling Australia’s health system, the Agency plays a key role in coordinating national engagement, delivery, and adoption of digital health to facilitate person-centred, connected healthcare. Our responsibilities span national digital health services and systems, including My Health Record, Electronic Prescriptions, and the 1800Medicare App.

About the Role

As the Director, Clinical Terminology (EL2), you will play a pivotal leadership role in shaping and advancing clinical terminology and interoperability across the Australian health sector. Reporting to the Branch Manager, Informatics and Standards, you will drive the delivery and strategic direction of nationally significant clinical terminology, including the coordination of National Release Centre products and services. This full-time ongoing opportunity will see you provide strategic product leadership, foster jurisdictional and industry adoption, represent Australia in international forums, and build strong partnerships with a broad range of stakeholders to support the delivery of national digital health priorities.

Leading a high-performing team, you will combine deep expertise in clinical terminology, standards and digital health with strong program, people and stakeholder management capabilities. You will oversee complex projects in a multi-vendor environment, contribute to national standards development, and lead governance, education and engagement activities that strengthen terminology adoption and interoperability across the healthcare system. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced leader with expertise in SNOMED CT AU, the Australian Medicines Terminology (AMT) and interoperability standards to influence the future of digital health and deliver meaningful outcomes at a national scale.

Skills and Experience

  • Expert knowledge of clinical terminology and interoperability standards, including SNOMED CT AU, Australian Medicines Terminology (AMT), and HL7 FHIR.
  • Proven leadership and people management experience, with the ability to lead high-performing teams and deliver strategic outcomes in complex environments.
  • Strong program and project management capabilities, including experience delivering digital health initiatives within multi-vendor environments and managing competing priorities.
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills, with a demonstrated ability to influence and collaborate across government, industry, jurisdictions, and international forums.
  • Strong communication and strategic thinking skills, with experience preparing high-quality briefs, reports, governance papers, and executive-level advice.
  • Extensive knowledge of digital health, standards, and interoperability, with the ability to drive national adoption, governance, education, and engagement activities that support healthcare transformation.
