This is a Targeted Position. AIGI strongly encourages applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, who will be given priority consideration for this role. This position is part of a special measure under s. 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth) to support the advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. All candidates are welcome to apply.

WHO WE ARE

The Australian Indigenous Governance Institute (AIGI) is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation recognised for leadership and excellence in Indigenous governance. We support Indigenous peoples, organisations, and communities with tools, resources, and networks to strengthen self‑determination through strong self‑governance. Headquartered at Brisbane Technology Park with staff working remotely across Australia, AIGI is governed by an all‑Indigenous Board. Our 2025-2028 Strategic Plan focuses on Indigenous Governance Leadership and Success, Indigenous knowledge and wisdom, and long‑term sustainability.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We have an exciting opportunity for a Head of Advisory (Partnership & Impact) to join our team, reporting to the Executive Director Business Development & Delivery. This role leads AIGI's advisory services, strategic partnerships, impact practice, major events and advisory growth pipeline.

You will develop and convert values-aligned opportunities, strengthen relationships with partners, funders and clients, and provide direct leadership to our Project Specialists and Project Officers, ensuring advisory work and partnerships are culturally grounded, sustainable and aligned with AIGI's strategy.

This role is hybrid (preferred), with remote work available by arrangement. Candidates located anywhere in Australia are welcome to apply.

Your main role responsibilities include:

  • Translating the Executive Director-approved business development strategy into an advisory growth plan and leading its implementation
  • Building and maintaining trusted, strategic relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nations, governance bodies, funders, government and corporate partners
  • Leading the development of complex advisory proposals, pitches, funding applications and scopes of work, including commercial and partnership negotiations
  • Retaining functional accountability for the Indigenous Governance Awards and other major AIGI events, including strategy, budget parameters, risk and performance
  • Leading implementation of AIGI's Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning approach across advisory, partnership and event activities
  • Managing the advisory and partnership pipeline, including opportunity qualification, conversion tracking and revenue forecasting
  • Providing clear, visible and supportive leadership to direct reports, including work planning, coaching, feedback and performance support
  • Any additional tasks that align with your role and responsibilities as directed by the Executive Director Business Development & Delivery

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

To be successful in this role, you ideally have:

  • Significant experience in advisory, business development, partnerships, impact, consulting, public policy, governance or a related field
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Indigenous organisations, communities and individuals in culturally appropriate ways
  • Strong relationship-building and influencing capability across government, corporate, philanthropic, community and Indigenous governance contexts
  • Strong proposal, pitch, report and strategic writing capability, with the ability to scope advisory projects including budgets, risk and impact measures
  • Experience overseeing project delivery, budgets, timelines, deliverables and quality assurance processes
  • Experience leading, supervising or mentoring staff, project teams or cross-functional contributors
  • Experience providing strategic oversight of major events, awards, conferences or comparable multi-stakeholder initiatives
  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant field, such as Indigenous studies, public policy, governance, business, research or law, or equivalent professional experience

WHO YOU ARE

You are a strategic and personable relationship builder who thrives on developing meaningful partnerships and converting them into high-quality, values-aligned advisory work. You bring strong commercial instincts, exceptional writing and negotiation skills, and the confidence to lead complex, bespoke engagements from proposal through to delivery.

You lead with warmth and accountability, genuinely invest in the growth of your team, and understand the importance of culturally safe and respectful engagement in everything you do. You are comfortable holding strategic oversight of high-profile initiatives, while empowering others to lead day-to-day delivery.
