Geophysical Field Technician – Remote FIFO/DIDO | Physically Demanding Field Role

📍 Regional & Remote Australia | 🥾 Field-Based | ⛺ FIFO / DIDO

About Daishsat

Daishsat Geodetic Surveyors is a leading Australian geophysical survey company delivering high-quality geophysical and geodetic surveys for government agencies, exploration companies, and mining groups across Australia and internationally.

Our work supports mineral exploration — helping to discover the critical and rare earth minerals required to power the future. We are known for our precision, strong safety culture, and ability to deliver reliable data in challenging, remote environments.

About the Role

We are seeking enthusiastic, motivated, and resilient individuals to join our field teams delivering geophysical surveys in some of the most remote regions of Australia — and occasionally overseas.

Reality Check:

This is physically demanding, remote field work. You will spend weeks away from home, walk long distances daily, work in heat and isolation, and live with limited comforts. If you are looking for a fixed roster, camp-based FIFO lifestyle, or office-focused role, this position is unlikely to be a good fit.

Fieldwork typically involves:

  • Extended periods away from home
  • Basic living conditions
  • Physically demanding work in hot, dry, isolated terrain

You will work in small field crews collecting geophysical and geodetic data on foot, via UTVs (tracked or wheeled), 4WD vehicles, and occasionally by helicopter. Days regularly involve walking 15–20 km while carrying equipment across rugged terrain.

Accommodation varies by project and may include bush camps with basic facilities, mining camps, local towns, or pubs. Deployments are typically around 2-4 weeks, with some projects extending longer. There is no fixed roster, and travel is FIFO or DIDO from major centres.

This role suits people who enjoy remote work, physical challenges, and operating as part of a small, capable team off-grid.

A Day in the Life

A typical day may involve pre-start safety checks, navigating to survey locations, walking long distances collecting data, maintaining equipment, assisting with logistics, and completing daily reporting. Often in hot, remote environments with basic living conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect high-quality geophysical and geodetic data across large survey areas
  • Operate, care for, and maintain sensitive survey equipment
  • Safely operate modified 4WDs and UTVs in remote conditions
  • Walk long distances daily with a backpack in challenging terrain
  • Assist with logistics, safety compliance, and daily field reporting
  • Maintain vehicles, equipment, and camp infrastructure
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, equipment, and field issues as they arise
  • Take ownership of equipment condition, data quality, and personal safety
  • Work safely, efficiently, and cooperatively in small teams

What We're Looking For

  • Strong commitment to safety, accuracy, and quality
  • Excellent physical fitness and mental resilience, including the ability to walk 15–20 km per day carrying equipment in hot conditions
  • Experience working in remote or rugged environments
  • Manual C Class Driver's License (MR/HR advantageous)
  • Confident off-road driving ability
  • Completion of a 4WD course is required, which can be completed either before starting or after hiring
  • Mechanically minded with basic vehicle or equipment maintenance skills
  • Current First Aid & CPR certificates are required before starting employment
  • Willingness to work away from home for up to 4–5 weeks at a time
  • Ability to pass drug & alcohol screening and a pre-employment medical
  • Hold or be willing to obtain a National Police Clearance
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team
  • Comfortable using digital tools (Excel, tablets, GPS systems)
  • Legal right to work in Australia

Highly Desirable

  • Relevant education (vocational or higher)
  • Qualifications in geoscience, geology, surveying, exploration, or mining fields
  • Experience in geophysics, mineral exploration, surveying, agriculture, mechanical or remote fieldwork
  • 4WD or defensive driving certification
  • Experience with fly-camping and remote living
  • Based in Adelaide or Perth

Career Progression

Daishsat is a growing company with long-term opportunities for the right people. Field Technicians who demonstrate strong safety performance, reliability, attention to detail, and leadership potential can progress into more senior roles, including:

  • Crew Lead / Field Supervisor – leading small field crews, coordinating daily activities, managing logistics, and acting as the primary link between the field and office teams
  • Specialist Roles – developing expertise in specific survey methods, equipment, or project types
  • Geophysical Data Processor – transitioning into office based or hybrid roles focused on processing, QA/QC, and preparation of geophysical surveys, supporting field operations and delivering high quality data products to clients.

As Daishsat continues to expand its service offering, new technologies including drone and UAV-based survey services are in the pipeline, creating future opportunities for team members with the aptitude and interest to be involved in emerging survey methods.

Progression is based on consistent performance, attitude, and capability rather than time served, with additional training and responsibility provided as skills develop.
