If this sounds like the choice you want to make, then choose MITRE - and make a difference with us. MITRE | Australia’s Australian Security Accelerator Program (ASAP) is designed to attract and integrate experienced technologists, engineers, and cybersecurity professionals into mission-critical national security work. Based in Canberra, at the centre of Australia’s national security ecosystem, ASAP provides a high-impact pathway for career professionals to transition into MITRE’s unique operating model and immediately contribute to complex, real-world missions. As Australia’s first national security charity, MITRE | Australia partners with government, industry, academia, and international allies to solve the nation’s hardest security challenges. ASAP serves as MITRE’s strategic on-ramp for experienced professionals—allowing proven practitioners to rapidly integrate into MITRE programs, apply their expertise at scale, and shape the next generation of national security capability. The program is a three-month, intensive engagement focused on mission delivery, technical leadership, and systems-level impact. Participants are embedded in active MITRE programs supporting Defence, Intelligence, and national resilience partners. The program includes a two-week immersion at MITRE’s U.S. headquarters in Washington, D.C. and Boston, where participants engage directly with global cyber mission leaders, advanced research teams, and allied programs. Following the program, participants transition into permanent senior technical or leadership roles within MITRE | Australia—joining a rapidly growing organisation dedicated to strengthening Australia’s security through trusted, mission-driven innovation. Role & Responsibilities As a Cybersecurity Specialist within MITRE | Australia’s Australian Security Accelerator Program (ASAP), you will operate as a contributor and technical leader on mission-critical cyber programs. You will be embedded directly into active government and defence engagements, where you will help shape cyber strategy, architect secure systems, and guide delivery teams. This three-month program is designed to rapidly integrate experienced practitioners into MITRE’s mission environment, enabling you to apply your expertise to high-consequence problems and influence outcomes from day one. During the program, you will:

  • Lead or co-lead cyber mission activities supporting Australian Defence, Intelligence, and national security partners
  • Provide technical direction on secure system architecture, cyber risk management, and defensive design across complex environments
  • Perform and guide threat modelling, vulnerability analysis, and cyber risk assessments for operational systems
  • Support cyber capability development, including maturity uplift aligned to the ISM, Essential Eight, and related Australian Government frameworks
  • Advise mission teams on cyber trade-offs, security controls, and operational risk in high-consequence environments
  • Collaborate with systems engineers, data scientists, software teams, and government stakeholders to embed security into mission architectures
  • Contribute to incident preparedness, resilience planning, and response frameworks for critical systems
  • Mentor junior engineers and analysts within project teams, helping build MITRE | Australia’s next generation of cyber talent
  • Engage with MITRE’s global cyber community during a two-week immersion in the U.S., including exposure to advanced research, red-blue team operations, and allied cyber programs
  • Support integration with U.S. and Five Eyes partners on shared cyber missions and frameworks

Following the program, you will transition into a permanent cybersecurity role within MITRE | Australia, continuing to deliver high-impact work across national and allied security programs. Basic Qualifications

  • Strong working knowledge of Australian Government cyber frameworks, including the ISM, Essential Eight, and PSPF
  • Experience across multiple cyber domains such as architecture, defensive operations, vulnerability management, threat intelligence, or cyber risk management
  • Ability to provide technical leadership, make risk-based decisions, and influence stakeholders across technical and executive audiences
